OKLAHOMA DYNASTY — Week 6, 2024: BYE Week Brings Recruiting Explosion as Sooners Rise to #5 Class Nationally

By local beat reporter, The Norman Transcript

Bye Week Stabilizes Sooners as Program Recalibrates at Midseason

Week 6 gave #13 Oklahoma a chance to finally exhale.

After a grueling early schedule that included battles with Houston, Tulane, Tennessee, and Auburn, the Sooners entered the bye at 3–2 (1–1 SEC) — tied for 9th place in the SEC standings — and in need of recovery, reflection, and recalibration.

But while the Sooners rested on the field, the coaching staff delivered the biggest recruiting week of the entire Steve Taylor era.

What happened off the field may define Oklahoma’s future just as much as its first five games.

Massive Recruiting Surge Elevates Oklahoma to the #5 Class in the Nation

The Sooners entered the bye week with momentum, but by Saturday night, they had delivered a thunderstorm of commitments that vaulted the program into the #5 recruiting class nationally.

Six commitments in seven days.
Four blue-chip defensive and offensive pieces.
And all from the Sooners’ top recruiting board.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ HB Diego Mughelli — Cedar Hill, TX

The top power back on the board. Immediate short-yardage and red-zone impact potential. A major regional recruiting win.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ TE Delroy Stevens — Colleyville, TX

One of the best blocking tight ends in the class. A physical tone-setter Taylor values highly in run-game schemes.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ RG Manuel Alfaro — Mansfield, TX

SEC-ready strength. Alfaro adds muscle and depth to the future interior line — long considered a priority for Taylor’s rebuild.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ RE Jason Doucet — Owasso, OK

A top in-state edge rusher who projects as a future defensive anchor. Doucet’s burst and motor fit perfectly into a 4–3 pass-rush structure.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ SS Sean Upshaw — Brock, TX

A violent, downhill safety with elite run-support traits. Upshaw is one of the highest-ceiling defenders in OU’s class.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ K Dennis Spann — Dallas, TX

One of the most accurate kickers in the cycle. A quiet but meaningful upgrade for special teams stability.

These additions moved Oklahoma from a fringe top-15 class into the top 5, trailing only powerhouse SEC programs.

One Loss on the Trail — And a Quick Response

The Sooners suffered one setback when 4★ DT Timmy Denney committed to Texas A&M.

But the staff pivoted instantly, identifying a new target:

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ DT Keshawn Dressler — Theodore, AL

  • #256 nationally
  • 6’1”, 291 lbs
  • Power Rusher archetype

Dressler now sits as one of two DTs on the Sooners’ board.

Official Visits Lock In for Key Targets

Oklahoma’s surge in momentum extended beyond commitments, as several priority targets scheduled their official visits:

  • 4⭐ WR Graham Sumner
  • 4⭐ WR Stephen Maggitt
  • 4⭐ LG Carlos Giraldo
  • 4⭐ RT Joey Magana
  • 4⭐ CB Enrique Graves

All five prospects currently list the Sooners as their projected leaders, setting the stage for more movement in the weeks ahead.

The recruiting machine is running at full throttle.

Where Oklahoma Stands at Midseason

At the bye week, Oklahoma holds a 3–2 (1–1 SEC) record:

  • Rank: #13 nationally
  • SEC Standing: Tied for 9th
  • Strength of Schedule: Top 10 in the country
  • Team morale: Stabilizing

Coach Taylor’s team has shown flashes of top-10 play but also clear growing pains adjusting to SEC-level competition.

Yet despite on-field inconsistency, the program’s off-field trajectory is unmistakably rising.

Looking Ahead: South Carolina Comes to Norman

With the bye behind them, Oklahoma prepares to host South Carolina in Week 7 — a pivotal game that could elevate the Sooners back into SEC contention or deepen the early-season hole.

The rest will help.
The recruiting momentum will energize.
And the Sooners enter the second half of the season with renewed optimism.
